Battery Inspection

At the start of each boating season, check your battery’s charge level and refill it with fresh distilled water. If your battery can still hold a strong charge, it should be in good condition and ready for plenty of adventures. Once you’re done checking the charge level, carefully clean the battery and apply fresh grease. Keep in mind that most boat batteries typically last for around four to five years.

Check Your Fluid Levels

When you’re getting your boat ready for summer, be sure to check the fluid levels. If you didn’t change the oil before the off-season, now is the time to do it. You’ll also want to change or refill the outdrive oil as needed. Drain any fluids left in the cooling system before you refill them.

Next, check the condition of the fuel. Ideally, you would have filled the fuel tank before storing your boat to prevent moisture buildup. You also should’ve added a fuel stabilizer. If you skipped these steps, you’ll likely need to drain the tank and refill it with a fresh batch of fuel.

Look For Damage

Inspect your boat for any signs of damage that need to be addressed. For instance, it’s not uncommon for cracks to form in the hoses and fuel lines while your vessel is in storage. If you find any signs of leakage or excessive wear, make sure you replace the damaged components.

Examine the Electrical System

The electrical system should be in good condition, so you’ll want to examine it closely as you’re getting your boat ready for summer. Even a tiny electrical glitch can make a big difference when it comes to safety, so you don’t want to skip this step. If you find any issues, repair them before your next boating trip.

Review Your Gear & Equipment

Don’t forget to review your safety gear and boating equipment. Take note of anything that may need to be repaired or replaced. You should stock your boat with fresh safety supplies before you hit the water. You’ll need PFDs (personal flotation devices), signal flares, fire extinguishers, and a first-aid kit.
