Boats parked at the dock.It doesn't take an expert to tell the difference between a boat that has been freshly detailed and a boat that has been sorely neglected. That being said, boat detailing is not only about appearances! This is an important maintenance task that will preserve the finish on your boat. Not sure where to start? Read on for a quick primer on boat detailing from Whaleneck Marine!

Supplies

The first step to detailing your boat is to gather the supplies you'll need. Make sure to use products that are compatible with the finishes on your boat! You can check the user manual provided with your boat for a list of recommended cleaning products. These may include marine soap, wax remover, glass cleaner, vinyl cleaner, carpet shampoo, and metal polish.

In addition to your cleaning products, you will need a few sponges and soft-bristle brushes, along with towels, buckets, a vacuum cleaner, and a chamois cloth. You should also reach for a hose with an adjustable spray nozzle.

Washing and Waxing

The detailing process begins with a thorough wash and wax. Start by rinsing your boat from top to bottom, then wash your boat in sections. Make sure to rinse each section before the soap dries, and only scrub the surfaces of your boat when they are good and wet.

Your boat should be waxed about every 2-4 months to protect the finish. If it's time to apply a fresh coat of wax, you will first need to remove the old wax with a dewaxing product. Use plenty of rags, and switch them out frequently to avoid spreading the old wax around. Once the old wax has been completely removed, add a fresh coat of wax according to the product directions. Remember to buff the wax after application!

Detailing

Once your boat has been cleaned, waxed, and buffed, it's time to focus on the details. This process will depend on the particular features of your boat. Some of the tasks involved in detailing your boat may include:

  • Cleaning the glass surfaces, such as the windows, windshield, and mirrors
  • Cleaning and polishing the metal surfaces
  • Cleaning the vinyl surfaces and seating
  • Removing any mildew stains with a 4-to-1 water and ammonia solution
  • Cleaning and airing out the cabin
  • Vacuuming the carpets
  • Giving your boat a thorough maintenance inspection

Once you have completed these tasks, you can sit back and admire your clean, beautiful boat! If you need more advice on boat maintenance, you are always welcome to consult the team here at Whaleneck Marine. We serve Merrick, NY, and our neighbors from Queens.
